Used Exercise Bikes…What to Choose

Exercise bikes provide a very low impact aerobic exercise. There are two types of exercise bikes, upright and recumbent. Upright is the common traditional type. The pedals, handlebars and other parts are all about the same as a road bike. On recumbent bikes, the pedals are placed at the front of the machine, instead of on the bottom as on an upright bike. The user sits in a recline position to operate the bike.

What type of bike you purchase will depend on your necessities and taste. If you cannot afford to buy a brand new exercise machine, there are used exercise bikes for you to choose from. Listed below are the things that you need to consider when shopping for a used bike.

Price. The most important aspect in your search for an exercise bike is price. Of course, used bikes are less expensive than new ones, but if you are looking for sophistication and quality, you still might pay a pretty hefty price.

Comfort. You should pick a bike that is comfortable. Comfort is very important because if you are not comfortable on your exercise machine, you will most likely not be using it for long. Also, it is important to make sure that the seat fits properly. The seat should be large enough to accommodate riders of all sizes.  If you are not a cyclist, you might consider having a recumbent type instead of the upright bike.

Adjustability. It is important to choose a bike in which height can be adjusted with ease, so that users of all heights can use the equipment easily.

Resistance and Operation
. Exercise bikes provide adjustable resistance in one of two ways, through tension belts or magnetic resistance. Magnetic resistance is quiet and more consistent in operation compared to tension belts; but, as expected, they are more expensive.

Console Functions. There are basic functions that an exercise bike should have. Monitoring the intensity of your workout is essential, and heart rate monitors are very important in assisting your monitoring. You should be working within your target heart rate zone in order to safely improve your fitness and burn calories. Some high end bikes feature workout programs that adjust the workout intensity based on readings from the built in heart rate monitor. When buying a used exercise bike, be sure to check the console and other electronics to make sure that they are still working properly.
